AeroED Group Brief - May, 2016
Aerospace & Summer Institute. As a result of numerous ECEDC and East County Chamber of Commerce education meetings attended by AeroED Group Co-founder Rich Kenney, the Group has been invited to partner with the Grossmont Union High School District in presenting the 2016 Summer Institute series.
The week-long events are designed to prepare teachers for the next-year projects, now to include aerospace-related topics. There are three one-week summer-camp-style programs scheduled: June 20-24; and two during July 11-15. Some Group members will be needed to flesh out the program to be announced soon. These events may involve the SDASM Annex and Allen Airways Flight Museum on Gillespie Field.
Build an Airplane. Members of AeroED Group recently researched the possibility of allowing San Diego students to build an airplane. Kearny High School (via Col. Tim Swann, US Army Retired, Army JROTC Commander) and Santana High School have taken great interest in the student project to build an RV-12 airplane as part of their Project-Based-Learning program. Efforts by the School Districts are now underway to evaluate the projects.
Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Rowena Hart, Business Development Dir. of the EC Chamber of Commerce, was recently hosted at the SDASM Annex at Gillespie Field for her first time, being duly impressed, she setting up a full Chamber "Mixer" at the Annex on July 14th . Also, the EC Chamber Business & Education Committee has scheduled a monthly meeting to be held at the Annex September 16th at 8AM. AeroED Group will make an aerospace education presentation at that meeting.
New Advisor. Author/Historian Dr. Gary Fogel, PhD., has accepted the invitation to be an Advisor to AeroED Group. Dr. Fogel has offered to provide presentations to K-12 students concerning:
Model aviation (with free foam gliders for the kids)
History of gliding and soaring in San Diego
History of John J. Montgomery and early glider flight in our area
Academy of Model Aeronautics. Dr. Fogel also introduced the Group to Mr. Bill Pritchett, Education Director of the Academy of Model Aeronautics. http://www.modelaircraft.org/. A review of this website reveals a cornucopia of hands-on projects for our June and July Aerospace Summer Institute. By formal association with AMA, we will also have access to a variety of new resources and opportunities. See: http://amaflightschool.org/education
April 10: Better than ever,16 aircraft "FlyOver" at the 2016 La Jolla Concours D'elegance organized by their Committee Member Rich Kenney in association with Allen Airways Flight Museum and the San Diego chapter of the Antique Airplane Association which received a $1500 donation for its scholarship fund.
April 20, 2016. AIAA members Aerospace Engineer students at SDSU invited Telles as a guest speaker during a General Meeting. Topic: “What I learned About Engineering as a USMC Fighter and Helicopter Pilot”.
April 25, 2016. While attending the AIAA-SD Annual Awards Gala dinner Mr. Michael Atwood, General Atomics manager, suggested AeroED Group coordinate efforts with the GA STEM team. A meeting will be scheduled soon.
April 27, 2016. Solana Santa Fe Elementary School K-6 hosted a STEM after school event with AeroED Group participating with aerospace videos, mobile flight simulator, and parent/student discussions with 100+ students.
May 4, 2016. San Diego Sky Tours recently joined as a AeroED Group partner and has donated two honorary flights per month as a reward for the Group “Exceptional Aerospace Educators” project. The project is intended to motivate teachers to pursue aerospace activities in the classroom. The recent winner is Col. Tim Swann, US Army (tank commander), Retired, Director of the Kearny High School Army JROTC program. The program includes 6 high-end flight simulators for JROTC and USN Sea Cadets summer camps.

AeroED Group, dedicated to the facilitation and representation of aerospace in school classrooms, and as a career path, takes great pleasure in recognizing Colonel Tim Swann, U.S. Army (Retired), for his exceptional contribution to youth education as a teacher and for his leadership for the Junior Army ROTC at
Kearny High School, San Diego, California.
AeroED Group, partnered with San Diego Sky Tours, declares Col. Swann as an "Exceptional Aerospace Educator" worthy of due public recognition and recipient of the Honorary Flight hereby bestowed.
Declare on May 4th, 2016, at Montgomery Field, San Diego, California.
GKN Chem-Tronics. Located very near Gillespie Field, GKN has asks AeroED Group for assistance in developing a program to enhance career interest in aerospace among female students. This is part of an international GKN Corporation-widegoal. A planning meeting is expected soon.
May 14, 2016. Nine Monte Vista High School students, Spring Valley, took flight with the EAA Young Eagles program at Brown Field, arranged by Howard Young of AeroED Group.
This is a result of AeroED Group members introducing aerospace to Ms. Karen Bowers’ after-school science club (about 25 students, 75% Hispanic future engineers) over 3 separate 2-hour sessions starting back in Nov. 2015. The staff of EAA Chapter 14 at Brown did an impressive job with history, aero, and safety briefings. While waiting for the cloud ceiling to raise, the students experienced a live aircraft preflight. After the flights the students were really excited, grinning ear-to-ear. The nine students, seven of them young women, remarked that it was a life-changing experience, and would seriously consider an aerospace career pathway. Our thanks to Mark Albert and all at EAA Chapter 14 for making this day a success.
Bingo Paydirt!!!! Ms. Bowers spoke very highly about the success of the flight program for students. ( Click on image for video )
