AeroED Group Serves Teachers and Students
By Col. John Telles, Jr. USMC (Retired), Director AeroED Group
Kids and aviation just go together!! Just think of when/what first inspired nearly all aviators; even you, perhaps. Most likely it was a personal connection with a role model or mentor, or an unforgettable airplane experience. But in these days we more accurately refer to “aerospace” rather than purely “aviation.” Would you like to actively help inspire our youth towards success in aerospace? If so, read on …..
You can hear it everywhere: “STEM this …” and “STEM that …” Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) is the huge buzzword all over academia and industry, especially in aerospace. The goal is to produce smarter college grads and technicians for a stronger American industrial world leadership base.
Intro AeroED Group. We are utilizing the disciplines of aerospace technology coupled with critical thinking to provide both students, and those teachers who are responsible for implementation of STEM, with a toolkit of aerospace-based topics, class material, and experiences. AeroED Group seeks volunteers looking for a way of “giving back”: professionals looking for meaningful activity. Yes, preferably experienced civilian/military pilots, aerospace engineers, HR career placement/internship experts, manufacturers, managers, administrators, educators. The key is ANYONE with a passion or burn to help the kids get somewhere with their lives. Instructors/mentors/role models/leaders come in all shapes and sizes.
AeroED Group is guided by the following:
1. Professional Development of teachers responsible for implementing STEM in school classrooms. The focus is to teach the robustness and use of aerospace as a platform for STEM subjects. This is the most cost-effective method for reaching our youth.
2. Academics that help prepare students for success in colleges, universities, technical schools, as well as in apprenticeships and other post-secondary programs.
3. Career-based learning that delivers concrete knowledge and skills of problem-solving, emphasizing the practical application of academic learning and preparing students for high-skill, high-wage employment.
4. Professional learning with local job shadowing, apprenticeships, internships, and professional skill-building opportunities with local industry.
